Michael Lundeen
Lundeen Wines is a story of generations; of discovery, expression, and ancestral land passed from father to son.
Michael Lundeen, a third-generation Oregonian, found his calling to make fine wine in the Willamette Valley after returning to his family’s Yamhill County farm. From the time Michael and his father planted the first Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris vines in 2001, Poverty Bend Vineyard has been both the heartbeat of his wines and the catalyst for a future to come. Michael’s original vision of naturally handcrafting expressive and elegant wines in the Willamette Valley has since grown into a 20+ year career.
From the early days honing his skill with Pinot Noir luminaries at Willakenzie, Belle Pente, and Domaine Serene, and a stint abroad in Barolo, to his debut in 2007 as founding winemaker at Illahe Vineyards – Lundeen’s experience was developed from context and his success solidified his place in the Valley.
Michael joined Walnut City Wineworks as Winemaker in late 2010. Just a short hop from his own estate vineyard, the McMinnville-based winery was where his career would enter the next and most exciting phase. The once brick-red winery and custom crush facility now carries the Lundeen name and colors after he formally took ownership in 2022.
The lessons and hard work of those combined years have paid off. Growth carried Lundeen Wines into seven markets nationally, and Michael has steadily emerged as one of Oregon’s most lauded producers of Méthode Champenoise sparkling wines. Since the fittingly cold vintage of 2011, the annual production of sparkling wines has grown to 1,500 cases, and Michael still hand-disgorges every bottle à la volée.
As a Winemaker in a tight-knit community, Lundeen’s influence has been genuine. Central tenets – family, community, and environment – have guided his business and remained true over 20 years later. Building on the work of his father and grandfather, Michael continues to preserve the family farm for his son Colin and generations beyond. Michael directs the farming of nearly 40 acres utilizing no-till and Organic practices and maintains the LIVE sustainability certification (Low Input Viticulture and
Enology), one of the world's most robust programs. Upholding his commitment to the community starts with meaningful care and benefits for his employees and extends charitably to his neighbors and the neighborhood his family has called home for over 80 years.
