2016 Yamhill Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir

2016 Yamhill Springs Vineyard Pinot Noir

$75.00

Yamhill Springs Vineyard sits on a southwest facing slope in Yamhill Oregon that climbs to nearly 600 above sea level. From an own-rooted block of Wädenswil clone Pinot Noir, this wine is an intense expression of the vintage and vineyard. The bold ripeness achieved in 2016 was nicely accented by the spicy complexity imparted by partial whole cluster fermentation. Aged in French oak barrels.

region

Yamhill Springs sits atop delineated and mixed bands of Peavine and Jory soils. The region’s signature Peavine series consists of moderately deep colluvial soils derived from sandstone, siltstone, basalt, tuffaceous rock and shale. With low water retention and poor nutrients, establishing a dry-farmed vineyard is ambitious, but once acclimated, the vines tend to produce clusters with small berries and few seeds. The wines exhibit deep, concentrated fruit flavors and notes of mocha or cocoa. The presence of Jory soil is easily spotted as sections of the vineyard transition to the signature iron-rich reddish color. Wines from Jory soils are bright and high-toned with distinct red cherry flavors and voluminous perfume notes that present an almost candied profile.

vintage

Following relatively ideal back-to-back vintages, 2016 had big shoes to fill. Harvest came even earlier than the previous year, while the days were still warm, sunny and long. Crops were healthy and balanced, yields were low, and flavors expressive. Achieving ripeness was never an issue! With late season attention being fixed on retaining natural balance.
